TOC Final

This is my contents page I have followed the branding set by the front cover by using the same colour scheme and fonts, I have also inter-linked the branding used on the double page spread on my contents page too, I have done this by having the same “December 2009 Pulse” and then the page number. The only difference between them is they are slightly opposite to each other however this is simply because I want to have the page number right in the corner of the page so the “December 2009 Pulse” must switch sides depending on which page it is on (left or right.)
I have made my contents page very audience friendly as everything is neatly categorized and the page is not cluttered with information, I have done this because as I have previously mentioned I believe that magazines are bought for the purpose of relaxation not stress and worry that you cannot find the page you are looking for!

Photoshoot Images

I have chosen to use the second and fourth photographs for the contents page graphic contents. Unfortunately I was unable to take a satisfactory photograph of Tash Khan as we were short on time however I instead will use one of the photographs of her used in the film strip.

TOC Mock-Up Two

However with the time I had left in which to complete my work to a high-quality standard I realised I would be better off making a simpler contents page. I still wanted to include my graphic contents idea so I down scaled it to three eye catching pictures and used the rest of the page for the editor’s note and full magazine content. I split my full magazine content into three sections to make it more reader friendly these three sections where news, features and exclusive. For example in news I would place gossip articles or articles on album releases, in features interviews and current charts and in exclusive things that the reader can only find in pulse for example the interview with Megan Moore!

TOC Mock-Up One

Originally I wanted to make a double page contents page as I believe magazines are bought in order to help relax and indulge in personal interests so I wanted to use the right hand page for a graphic contents page using images with page numbers of the more important articles to save the consumer having to scan threw the entire contents to find the article which they were most interested in reading. I would then use the left hand page for the editor’s note and full contents of the magazine.

DPS Final

This is my final draft of my double page spread I have only made a slight changes here of removing the black bar across the bottom of the left hand page. However to solve the previous issue of having too much white space I have added some branding into this section of the double page spread. I have done this by simply adding the text “Pulse December 2009” next to the page number in the appropriate colours and fonts. This simple change has entirely changed the white space without needing to fill it completely.
The second change I have made is that of the pull quote here I have made the text slightly bigger and instead of centring it have aligned it to the left hand side of the column like the rest of the text, this has also made the whole page have a much more professional feel to it.

DPS Draft Two

This is my second draft of my double page spread, I fixed the over blur by simply adding in the photo again, I have only blurred the image very subtly as it is clear it does not have the overall effect that I had originally hoped for! I have also fixed the small bags underneath Tash’s eyes by using the clone tool and again adding a slight Gaussian blur to her face to make her appear flawless.

DPS Draft One

This is my first draft of my double page spread however there is a very obvious mistake in it, behind Tash in the main image I have blurred the background but I have blurred it far too much and it is not making her stand out as it was suppose to instead it is attracting attention from the whole double page spread entirely! I have however successfully added in all the photographs to the film strip and the after interview photograph.
I edited the film strip photographs as planed and am very pleased with there turn out as the white background and red dress are both remaining bold even though they are the smallest images used in the whole double page spread.

photoshoot Images

These are some of the images from my double page spread photoshoot, the last photograph shown is my main image, the second to last will be cropped and used as the photograph for underneath the interview and the others are some examples of the photographs I have taken which I plan to use for the film strip. Overall I am extremely pleased with this shoot!

DPS Mock-Up 3

Both mock up two and three are created using photoshop however draft two is in black and white, this was by mistake and draft three corrects this mistake and adds in the colours of fonts. I have also replaced the colour of Cheryl’s dress to help myself imagine how the final double page spread will look as Tash will be wearing the same red dress as seen on the front cover. This will help me to decided whether or not there will be too much red and will allow me to change the colourings now rather than later on after the photographs have been taken.

DPS Mock-Up 2

This is my second mock up of my double page spread to make it seem more real I have used a photograph of Cheryl Cole and have added in the film strip. In this mock up I decided on the exact positioning and fonts. Unlike my first mock up I have added a thick black bar across the bottom of the left hand page as the film strip fills a similar size block on the other page and without this bar there is an unwanted white space.

DPS Mock-Up Number 1

This is my mock up for my double page spread I kept it all quite simple as I wanted to use some interesting photographs and did not want the page to appear too busy! The three squares down the bottom of the right hand side of the page are going to be some kind of film strip showing smaller, more natural shots of Megan. I have added the colours to the text to make it an easy read for the audience, the grey is the interviewer and the red is Megan.

New Front Cover

This is the final draft of my new front cover, I decided on the selling line “Never miss a beat on the R&B scene” as it tied in well with the masthead. I also added in some new cover lines however my main cover line stayed the same with the exception of the removal of the informative explanatory text.
The new front cover follows a similar structure as the original however this time I used less cover lines and instead made the ones I did have larger, however I kept the selling line, main cover line and cover lines in pretty much the same places I just chose to embrace the use of white space as the background of the main image on its own is interesting enough and the use of any more cover lines could have over crowded the space.

Masthead

I still had to think of a new name for my magazine as it was suggested to me that “Bump&Grind” was too long! I soon settled on “Pulse”, a short but sweet, music related masthead!
Next was choosing the right font and positioning. The photograph bellow shows the positioning I first decided on however this was not quite as attention seeking as it could be I later decided to stretch it right across the top of the page, however because I could not rearrange the layers to make the masthead fall behind Tash’s head I used the rubber tool to rub out the unwanted selection of the text.
I chose to use the font “Bleeding Cowboys” as it looked quite damaged in places for example the letter’s L and E both have very noticeable distressed marks and this fitted in with the location of the shoot.

Eddited Image

I decided to keep the background of the photograph I had chosen to use for my main image however although I did want the neglect of the building to be noticed there were some dirty marks and an abandoned tap on the wall in the background which would distort text and attract unnecessary attention. To overcome this issue using the clone tool I removed them from the image along with some other minor marks on the wall.
I then began editing Tash herself removing some slight bags underneath her eyes again using the clone tool to do this and then adding a slight Gaussian blur to just her face to make it appear flawless, I selected the area by using the magic lasso tool. I then selected the whole of Tash and chose to inverse my selection I then added a very slight Gaussian blur to this area and then sharpened Tash slightly to make her stand out just that little bit more! I feathered the selection before sharpening in order to keep the image realistic and natural.
Finally to truly make the image attention-grabbing I enhanced the levels of contrast making the wall appear whiter and Tash’s dress much more prominent.

New Front Cover Shoot

After seeing some other peoples work I realised my front cover was not up to the same standard, to alter this I would have to make some drastic changes to my magazine, this would include a change in model, title, cover lines, and colour scheme.
I began from sracth however due to my late reconstruction of my magazine I was short on time and in order to not fall behind I began finding a new model, costume and suitable location immediately! The model posing as “Megan Moore” in the new version of my magazine is Tash Khan, for my front cover shoot I decided to have her wearing bold simplistic colours to attract attention however not distract from the other cover lines and masthead. I dressed Tash in a fitted deep red dress with a black leather jacket, tights and high heels.
I finally found inspiration for the location of the shoot by a slightly run down building, I shot outside capturing both the neglected pavement and the contrast of the white wall of the building. This basic environment only enhanced the bold colours that Tash was wearing, (an unexpected success!)
As there was no time to decide on which poses I wanted Tash to use in the photographs together we found stimulation through both fashion and music magazines.
The following three shots were my favourite from the shoot I eventually decided on the second for my main image on the front cover.
